Literally, hanging out your shingle refers to hanging up a sign that advertises your profession. Start to do business from your home, especially as a doctor or a lawyer:

  • After graduating, he decided to hang out a shingle as a consultant.

Jessica to Katrina: I’ll tell you how it went. I got hung out to dry.

Hung Out to Dry: To abandon someone who needs help. A variant of this phrase is left out to dry, as in, you left me out to dry. 

A good bit of:  

  • I will take a one week vacation as part of my 20 days annual leave.
  • I’m taking a paid day off tomorrow. (as part of my 20 days annual leave.)
  • I’m taking a sick day tomorrow. (as part of my 5 days sick leave.)

X How many annual leaves do you have?

  • How days do you have as annual leave?
  • How many days per year do you have for annual leave?
  • How days are you allotted for annual leave?

Conversation Lessons:

  • I went to an Indian restaurant on Kampachi Street. I parked my car on the road side and got a (no)parking ticket. I have to pay a fine of ¥10,000.
