Literally, hanging out your shingle refers to hanging up a sign that advertises your profession. Start to do business from your home, especially as a doctor or a lawyer:
- After graduating, he decided to hang out a shingle as a consultant.

Hung Out to Dry: To abandon someone who needs help. A variant of this phrase is left out to dry, as in, you left me out to dry.

- I’m taking a paid day off tomorrow. (as part of my 20 days annual leave.)
- I’m taking a sick day tomorrow. (as part of my 5 days sick leave.)
